Xiaomi Mi 8’s Alleged 3D Facial Recognition Module Leaked

Its merely an hour ago we report about
a new official teaser image that suggest Xiaomi is holding a launch event ( date and time not confirm) in Shenzhen also their were  speculations that they will use this platform to launch Xiaomi Mi 7 ( rumor suggest it to be called as Mi 8) along with their 8th Anniversary Edition smartphone. We also reported that Xaiomi's 8th Anniversary Edition smartphone will be the first Android smartphone to feature 3D facial recognition and now a leaked image of the structure of the 3D facial recognition setup has appeared on the internet which is rumored to be of the 8th Anniversary Edition smartphone.

At first the image was speculated to be the iPhone X with TrueDepth Camera and Face ID system, but when we  carefully look at it, we can see that the design of 3D light module (Dot projector) which is  different from the iPhone X, also the image  shows a modified version of the MIUI for the notch design. According to a recent report the 3D facial recognition for Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship smartphones was jointly developed by Qualcomm, Himax Technologies and Truly Opto-electronics.
A leakster from China also claims that the 8th Anniversary Edition smartphone will be launched as the Xiaomi Mi 8 and the leaked image of 3D facial recognition setup definitely belong to Mi 8 since the structure are completely different from what we saw on the iPhone X.

As you already know the Apple iPhone X  is the world’s first smartphone to feature 3D facial recognition. It is done by a series of process, at first the scanning the face of the user in 3D through a structured light 3D module combined with a TrueDepth Camera which enable it to capture the face data accurately by analyzing more than 30,000 invisible dots to make a depth map on the face, at the same time it also captures an infrared face image too.

After this, the neural engine of the A11 Bionic SoC  will convert the captured depth map and infrared image into a mathematical representation which is then matched with registered facial data of the user, this is how Apple programs it to work . The Face ID of the iPhone X is so secure that it is not only used for securely unlocking, but also for authenticating payments on it.
