Huawei is Working on the Kirin 710 SoC to Compete with Snapdragon 710

Qualcomm has recently launched the  Snapdragon 710 in the smartphone market, and it made its global debut on Xiaomi's latest announced Mi 8 SE  smartphone. Now,  today a new report has claimed that Huawei’s HiSilicon Technologies is now working on its own equivalent chipset dubbed as the Kirin 710, in order to compete with the Snapdragon 710 directly. Also reports have suggested that this chipset may launched in July this year

According to the report, the  Kirin 710 is  an upgrade of its predecessor Kirin 659 CPU, which aims at closing the performance gap seen between flagship smartphones and mid-tier ones.  The Kirin 710 will be based on Huawei’s own chipset architecture with Cortex A73 CPUs that is reportedly being built using a 12nm process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). It has to been noted that  Snapdragon 710 is built on 10nm process has a better performance without extra energy consumption that could affect battery life, on the other hand, Huawei’s new Kirin 710 chipset will have the same goal but will ultimately use much older technology (12nm), which means it could be less energy efficient compared to SD 710.

In comparison with Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset which is built on 10nm node at Samsung Electronics and feature a multi-core AI engine with neural network processing capabilities. The chipset includes two cores of Kryo 360 Cortex A75 clocked at 2.2GHz and six cores of Kryo 360 Cortex A55 which is clocked at 1.7GHz. The octa-core processor is coupled with Adreno 616 graphics that promises 35 percent better rendering of graphics. Recently report suggest that this SD710 SoC will be powering the upcoming devices from Vivo (Vivo NEX), HMD Global (Nokia) and Google.

Huawei and its subsidiary HiSilicon are yet to confirm the chip’s existence, but the report points towards a launch sometime next month (July), with the unveiling of the rumored Huawei Nova 3  (which is codenamed Paris) or Huawei P20 Lite. The Kirin 710 seems to be just an upgraded 659 that utilizes TSMC’s older 12nm manufacturing process and likely means poorer battery life is to be expected. However, it will have a dedicated neural processing unit which will enhance its AI capabilities.
